Student payments in China: Alipay, WeChat Pay, cards and cash

Updated 3 November 2026 · Redream team

The answer in 30 seconds

  • Install Alipay or WeChat Pay from an official source and check that both the app and your card issuer support your card.
  • An overseas phone number may be accepted, depending on the service; make sure you can receive verification codes.
  • Keep a backup payment method, such as a card and some yuan cash, rather than relying entirely on one phone.
  • Check the recipient, amount and fees before confirming. Ask your university separately how to pay tuition and use campus dining services.

Student payments in China deserve attention before you leave Morocco. Seeing a QR code at a shop does not mean every card or account will work. This guide separates everyday shopping, university payments and money transfers, helping you prepare practical alternatives for your first weeks.

1. Which payment methods should you prepare?

Official guides cover mobile payments, bank cards and cash. The Beijing guide to overseas bank cards explains that supported international cards can be linked to Alipay and Weixin Pay. This does not guarantee that every card issued in Morocco will be accepted.

  • Mobile wallet: for merchants that accept it after your account is activated.
  • Bank card: where the payment terminal or ATM supports your card.
  • Yuan cash: a useful backup when your battery runs out or an electronic payment fails.

Include payment preparation in your first-week arrival checklist.

2. What to check before leaving Morocco

  1. Ask your bank about international payments, security checks, card limits and foreign-currency fees.
  2. Confirm which phone number receives bank verification codes and how you will access it abroad.
  3. Download the app from an official store and complete identity checks only through its official process.
  4. Enter your identity as shown on the requested document and add a supported card.
  5. Prepare another payment method and keep official support contacts somewhere accessible without your phone.

Do not use an account registered in someone else’s name as your own. Do not send card photos or verification codes to an unverified contact. Plan your food and clothing budget alongside these practical steps.

3. Do you need a Chinese phone number?

The government guide to daily life services mentions registration using overseas or Chinese phone numbers, following the service’s instructions. A Chinese number is therefore not a universal requirement for every step. However, do not assume your Moroccan number will receive all verification messages without preparation.

If you obtain a Chinese SIM, check the account update process before changing your registered number. Retain access to the old number until important updates are confirmed.

4. QR payments: whose code gets scanned?

You may scan a merchant’s code inside the app, or show your payment code for the merchant to scan. The payment guide published in Tianhe in 2026 describes both methods. A code in an article or forwarded message is not an instruction to make a payment; verify the actual recipient.

  1. Check the merchant or recipient’s name.
  2. Confirm the amount and currency.
  3. Read any displayed fee or conversion information.
  4. Wait for the payment result and retain a receipt when needed.

If a payment is pending, check its history before paying again. When asking support for help, provide the time and transaction reference without sharing passwords or sign-in codes.

5. Moroccan cards and fees: what should you verify?

A fee quoted in an old post is not a current guarantee. App charges, issuer fees and exchange-rate conversion may be separate. Read the confirmation screen and service terms, then ask your bank about additional charges. A yuan amount alone does not tell you the final dirham cost.

If linking or payment fails, check the entered details, card balance or limit, and the rejection message. Contact the issuer or the app’s official support. A card network logo does not by itself guarantee approval of a particular transaction.

6. Tuition and campus dining require separate checks

For tuition or accommodation fees, ask the university for official recipient details, the required student or application reference, and the receipt you should keep. Do not send university fees to a personal QR code simply because someone claims to represent the institution.

Ask how the campus card or dining account works and how to top it up. Installing Alipay or WeChat Pay does not automatically connect every campus service. The international student office can advise whether a local bank account is useful; confirm the branch’s document requirements rather than assuming a passport is sufficient in every situation.

7. Build a backup plan

  • Flat battery: keep a power bank and an alternative card or cash.
  • Missing verification code: check the network and registered number, then contact the relevant provider.
  • Declined card: use an accepted alternative and investigate the decline with your bank.
  • Unclear charge: compare the receipt and card statement before requesting clarification.

Separate daily spending, university fees and an emergency reserve. A successful merchant purchase does not establish that your account supports every transfer or incoming-payment feature.

Frequently asked questions

Will every Moroccan bank card work?

No guarantee applies to all cards. Support depends on the issuer, card, account verification and requested transaction. Check with the app and your bank.

Can my phone be my only payment method?

A backup is more practical for essential purchases when the phone, network or card is unavailable.

Can I pay tuition through any QR code?

Use only the payment channel confirmed by the university and retain the correct reference and receipt.
