Are a foundation year and a language year the same?
Not necessarily. A foundation programme in China may mean language preparation or a pathway combining Chinese with academic subjects. Ask for the course content, final award and entry conditions for the degree you want to pursue afterwards.
Tsinghua lists its Chinese language programme as non-degree study, with a completion certificate and transcript subject to its requirements. The 2026 admissions FAQ from CUC also uses “preparatory” for language students. Each institution’s definition matters more than a promotional label.

When might academic preparation be useful?
If you want a Chinese-taught degree and need stronger science or mathematics foundations, look for a programme that explicitly includes those subjects. The 2009 ministry framework for foundation study under Chinese Government Scholarships illustrates a model combining Chinese with subject knowledge. Its scope is specific; it does not describe every current offer.
If your main gap is language, compare a Chinese course’s goals with your intended degree’s requirements. For an English-taught degree, check its actual requirements before adding a full year to your timeline and budget.
Get progression conditions in writing
- Which universities and majors can I apply to afterwards? Is the choice restricted?
- Is there an existing conditional degree offer, or must I submit a fresh competitive application?
- What grades, language level and attendance are required?
- Are interviews, tests or further documents required, and when?
- Does the intended degree require CSCA? Do not assume a foundation course creates an exemption.
- What happens if I miss the requirements: repeat study, an extension, another pathway or completion without progression? What would it cost?
Previous students entering a degree do not establish your own conditions. Check the programme, intake and written commitments applying to you.
Compare the cost of the whole pathway
Prepare linked budgets for the preparatory stage and the degree stage. Separate tuition, accommodation, insurance, books, exams, travel, administration and support services. Ask whether a scholarship covers language or foundation study and what conditions apply to funding in later years.
Mark each item as included, excluded or unconfirmed. Add payment dates, refund terms and the cost of a possible extra semester. An advertised price becomes useful when you know precisely what it covers and for how long.

Frequently asked questions
Is a foundation year compulsory for every Moroccan student?
There is no single answer for every pathway. Check the teaching language, your qualifications and university and funding requirements.
Does a language year replace HSK?
Do not assume it does. Ask the receiving university which language evidence is required and whether a specific exemption exists.
Does preparation guarantee a scholarship or degree place?
Do not infer a general guarantee. Institutions, subjects, progression conditions and funding must be set out in the programme documents.
Can I enter an English-taught degree after a Chinese language year?
Check the degree’s requirements separately. Completing Chinese study does not automatically prove English proficiency or academic eligibility.
