The 30-second answer
- The required HSK depends on the university, subject and teaching language; there is no universal admission level.
- Check level, score, speaking evidence and result date together, with scholarship rules considered separately.
- Before booking, match your preparation materials to the test version, centre and session you will use.
What is HSK, and when do you need it?
HSK for studying in China provides evidence of Chinese proficiency when a university or funding body requires it. Start with the programme: its teaching language, accepted evidence and submission deadline. Passing a language test does not replace the other academic admission requirements.
For an English-taught course, read that course’s own rules. Do not assume HSK is compulsory for entry simply because the institution is in China, or that Chinese will never be required later. Ask separately about admission, graduation and any practical placement.
If you are considering a Chinese language year before a degree, work backwards from your intended destination. Knowing the degree’s language target helps you choose preparation that actually supports your pathway.
HSK 4, 5 or 6: read the whole requirement
The level number alone is not enough. For example, Donghua’s 2026 master’s guide specifies HSK 5 with at least 210 points and an HSKK result for Chinese-taught courses. This is an institutional example, not a nationwide rule or a statement of 2027 conditions.
Use the table below to read your own offer. These are requirement-checking examples rather than thresholds that apply to every university.
| Wording in an announcement | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| HSK 4, HSK 5 or HSK 6 | The exact level and minimum score, not simply a pass at another level. |
| Speaking or an HSKK result | Whether it is required, and which level, score and booking process apply. |
| A recent or valid result | The accepted test date and result-submission deadline. |
| A language-certificate waiver | The conditions, alternative evidence and required approval. |
| A conditional language offer | When the condition must be met and what happens if it is not. |
HSK 3.0: choosing suitable preparation materials
The official Chinese Tests Service website displays an HSK 3.0 section with a syllabus, examples and introductory resources. Choose materials for your actual test version, rather than by level number alone.
Before paying, record the test name shown in the booking, its level, format and session. Ask the centre to confirm which official resources match it and how any required speaking components are booked. An old video or a general statement about a new version being used everywhere is not a substitute for confirmation about your session.
Keep the centre’s reply and your booking confirmation. If the result label or components differ from an older university guide, ask admissions how to present the evidence.
Registering from Morocco: where to start
Find an available centre and session through the official site. Its candidate instructions cover test and centre selection, personal information and photo, payment and the admission ticket. Registration details must match the accepted identity document.
- Set the university target first: do not book an insufficient level just because the date is convenient.
- Confirm with the centre: venue, format, fees, deadline and available seats.
- Check your identity details: use the exact information on the accepted document.
- Plan for the result: choose a session compatible with university and funding deadlines.
- Keep your records: booking, payment, admission ticket and correspondence.
This guide does not assume that a particular Moroccan city has an available session or that one price applies everywhere. Use confirmed options at booking time. If you will take the test abroad, check which identity document that centre accepts.
How long is an HSK result valid?
Chinese Testing International’s result rules give score reports used for Chinese university applications a two-year validity period from the test date. Also check the reference date specified by the university.
A result that seems recent now may be too old by a later deadline. Record your test date beside the application timetable and seek confirmation if you are near the limit. Avoid depending on results expected at the last possible moment, with no allowance for delay or another attempt.
A four-week revision plan if you are close to the target
This is a suggested planning method, not a promise to reach university-level Chinese from scratch in one month. If your diagnostic work shows a substantial gap, extend the preparation period and choose a date based on actual progress.
- Week 1 — diagnose: complete a sample suitable for your version and identify vocabulary, listening, reading and time-management weaknesses.
- Week 2 — repair specific gaps: learn words in sentences, replay short recordings and summarise their meaning. Explain why an answer was wrong instead of memorising only the correction.
- Week 3 — practise the relevant skills: work on the components required for your session. Seek feedback on writing or speaking where appropriate rather than relying only on word-recognition exercises.
- Week 4 — simulate and consolidate: practise under time constraints, review recurring mistakes and organise your documents and sleep schedule.
Divide daily sessions between listening, reading and active recall, adding writing or speaking according to the test. Adapt the duration to your starting point and availability. Measure improvement with suitable exercises, not just hours spent watching lessons.
Mistakes that waste time and money
- Preparing the wrong version: confirm books and samples before committing.
- Confusing a pass with the required score: record the programme’s exact threshold.
- Forgetting speaking evidence: do not assume one booking includes every required component.
- Using an incomplete timetable: allow for result release and delivery, not only the test day.
- Assuming admission is secured: language evidence is one part of the application.
Budget for the exam, preparation, travel and your available time together. The best session is not always the nearest one: it is the session you are ready for and whose result arrives in time.
Frequently asked questions
Is HSK 4 enough to study in China?
Only if it meets the written conditions for your programme and scholarship. Another course may require a different level, score or speaking component.
Does English-taught study mean I never need Chinese?
Check admission and graduation requirements separately. Chinese may also be useful in daily life even when the degree is taught in English.
Does a language year automatically replace an HSK result?
No. Ask what evidence is required after the course and whether a specific exemption is available.
How do I know which HSK version to prepare for?
Match the booking, session and centre with the official syllabus and samples. Confirm this before purchasing preparation materials.
Can I prepare in one month?
It depends on your starting point. Four weeks can organise targeted revision close to the goal, but cannot guarantee reaching the required level from beginner status.
